What will happen tomorrow (Part 2) ... Vinit Vartak ©
Why Indian students in Ukraine for education? Why Indian students not leave the battlefield till the end, what was the challenge in their escape and the difficulties they were facing, whether their behavior was right or wrong?
After the war in Ukraine, the biggest question facing India today is how to bring back the students who were studying there safely. About 20,000 Indian students are studying in Ukraine in various academic studies. The number of students, especially in the medical field, is high. Why do so many Indian students go to Ukraine when there is a good education system? We need to understand this question.
One of the reasons why this question has arisen is because of the proliferation of clerks in India in the last few years. Apart from engineers and doctors, there is another reason why students are not given proper direction to go to any other field. The manner in which marks are being distributed in 10th or 12th standard examinations. Therefore, a large number of students have got 100% marks. Many things will become clear if one does not get admission in the desired college or the manner in which money is transacted in doctors and engineering colleges and also considering the quality of Indian colleges internationally. Apart from this, reservation is the main reason.
With the exception of a few select colleges in India, the level of quality in colleges is low. Medical and engineering colleges today are a place to make money and make black money white. The cost of medical education today is in the Crores. In comparison, in a country like Ukraine, 5 years of education is completed in 50 lakhs. Less money, international degrees, the opportunity to move to a different country, the opportunity to pursue intellectual abilities without reservations were the reasons why so many Indian students were enrolled in Ukraine for education.
There are many reasons why students stay there till the last moment. We have to consider the financial and educational aspects. Students pay college fees. Which is for the whole year. If left unmanaged, they can be left astray and lose the money. There is no guarantee that the students will get accommodation as paid guest, hostel once they leave. Now is the time for exams. So there was a fear of wasting the whole year if they came back now. Many students may have taken educational loans. There are a number of things that are purchased, such as a TV, a fridge, an internet connection, etc., which can be very costly. The war will be over in a while but the lost year cannot come back which is why many students are waiting till the last moment. If your child or someone nearby is studying or has learned in a different country, then what I have written above can be guessed. So the students stayed in Ukraine until the last moment. Maybe the situation will clear up and college will start again.
But the situation worsened and a new problem arose for the students. As the clouds of war darkened, the Indian government and the foreign ministry called on students to leave Ukraine. But the students waited until the last moment. As the war began, Almost Everyone began to pull out of Ukraine. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the whole system of Ukraine began to riot. The police system, the public order, all of a sudden came under stress. Such news is being spread now as the Indian government did not give an early warning. But wouldn't the students who decide to go to Ukraine be aware of the situation on the ground and decide not to leave? If they did not, it was their choice. Whatever the reasons, how can the Government of India be responsible for their personal decision? I mean, the Indian government has already said go away and if nothing happens, They will blame our government for wasting there year and if they don't report it, the Indian government is to blame. So when are students going to take responsibility for the decisions they make?
Be it the government of India or the government of any country in the world. It is a great blessing to save one's own people in a war-torn country. As many as one million Ukrainians have fled Ukraine so far. In such a scenario, will the Ukrainians be given priority in the public order or the Indians? Many countries like India may be working for their citizens. If I were the head of a train, bus, police or public order, how many priority calls would I get from the Ukrainian government? How many countries' presidents or officials have used weights for their respective countries? We can guess this. Notice this is a battlefield. That makes the question worse.
India's relations with Ukraine are not so good. Ukraine has always opposed with India. The biggest problem facing India was that Ukraine would not help India much due to its proximity to Russia. That is why India did not ask Ukraine for help but asked Russia for help. While Russia was on its side to co-operate with the Indian students, on the other hand, India took immediate steps to get the Indians scattered all over Ukraine out of Ukraine. Appropriate paperwork has been prepared on the background of visa and corona for Indians to travel to another country from Ukraine. Some of these things don't happen overnight. Political, economic and international relations at many levels have to be used at such times. For this, in the last three to four days, 4-5 meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Security have been held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. A lot of mechanisms have been put in place to work out how all these things can be controlled on different fronts.
Indian cabinet ministers have been sent there to give access to Indians in different countries. So that India's pressure on the system will remain the same and in case of any problem, the decision making process will be expedited in the presence of the Union Minister. Russia's aggression has increased in the case of Ukraine. Russia had provided a six-hour safe passage to India at a time when pressure was mounting on Russia not to invade Ukraine. Russia also allowed Indian students to enter Russian territory without a visa and allowed Indian planes to fly. But it is true that when the situation gets out of hand, Indian efforts are hampered somewhere. There is no doubt about the pushback to the students, their opposition to boarding the train and the harassment of the Indian students. But on the battlefield of another country, India or any other nation will have this problem. If we want Marathi as a priority in Maharashtra, then what is wrong with the people of Ukraine giving priority to their people? The Indian government cannot control the system there. But what we have is that we have a habit of resisting. On the one hand, while students from other countries are making their way with the Indian tricolor, some Facebook celebrities are breaking the stars of how Pakistan accommodated their students. Anyway, everyone thinks according to their strengths, so it is better not to talk about it.
In all these difficulties, the Government of India started Mission Ganga. Many students were brought back but They were complain of not given food, accommodation, taxi fare from the airport to home and the list goes on. It has been stated that it is the duty of the Government of India to repatriate you. Students who spend lakhs and crores of rupees for their education, but for a return flight, are reluctant to pay a few thousand rupees. The Indian government is calculating millions of rupees for this flight. It is up to the students to decide from whose pocket the money comes. Students and their parents need to keep in mind that if the decision to stay on the battlefield is made by the students for any reason, then they are responsible for the situation. On the one hand, other countries are stepping away from the situation, leaving their citizens to their own devices. The Indian government has enlisted the help of the Indian Air Force.
It is very easy to sit in India and give up everything. Of course, there will be room for improvement in Mission Ganga. Of course students have to deal with stress. Certainly some students are being held hostage. But Indian government agencies are cooperating to the best of their ability.Opposition parties have stated they are satisfied with the efforts made by govt. of India. The tweet of a leader like Shashi Tharoor is definitely pleasing. In such a situation, I sincerely think that we as a country should forget about party and party politics and think of such things as Nation. So at this moment opponents are welcome for their role.
