As a child, you read about Archimedes and Sir Isaac Newton in a science book. Eureka, Archimedes shouting Eureka, and Newton exploring gravity by looking at an apple falling from a tree. Of course, there is no hard evidence today that these things really happened. Many today say that these stories are fictional. In any case, these are the things that have ignited the minds of many young students in India to this day. This is where the sweetness of science and the curiosity about it first comes from. One such student was Abhay Ashtekar from Kolhapur district in Maharashtra.

While studying at a Marathi medium school in Mumbai, Sir Isaac Newton's apple made a home in his mind forever. He realized that the gravity of an apple falling from a tree was the same everywhere in India or India. But in both these places, language, culture, thought, society are all changing. So it is better to study something that is stable than to changing subject. After completing his high school education in Mumbai, he jumped for a degree at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States. From there, he pursued a doctorate in basic physics, earning a doctorate from the University of Chicago.

Albert Einstein's Theory of General Relativity had made a home in his head and mind. The connection between space and time, two basic things in physics, was further aroused by his curiosity. He did research on the subject of gravity and its relation to the universe. While proving the theorem of loop quantum gravity, he discovered variables which are today known as 'Ashtekar variables'. (Loop Quantum Gravity is a link between quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity.) Dr. Ashtekar's research has made it easier to understand Albert Einstein's theory. He was awarded the Einstein Prize by the American Physical Society for his significant research.

It is our great misfortune that Dr. Abhay Ashtekar, who was educated in a Marathi medium school in Mumbai and raised the flag of his accomplishment on the world stage, is not among the people who carry the flag of Marathi identity in the streets today. Marathi identity does not last just by growing a beard, tying a feta, putting Tila on the forehead or waving the saffron flag of identity. Of course, our society is not strong enough to understand this. He is inspired by Bhagwad Gita. Dr. Abhay Ashtekar, who is highly respected in the world for his research. Today, Dr. Ashtekar is an honorary member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. Even after taking education through Marathi medium, he has made his mark on the world horizon.

My heartfelt salute to Dr. Abhay Ashtekar, who is proud of his Indian and Marathi identity through his research in basic physics. My best wishes for their further research and travel.

Jai Hind !!!
